As a parent, you may want to know more about special education law and how it applies to your student. The world of special education can be confusing and complicated. I can assist families understand their rights, the evaluation process, and help them collaborate with schools more effectively to meet their individual needs.
I have supported families and students in pre-k through college age for a number of years and have developed 504 and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for eligible students under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
To qualify, a student must meet specific criteria set forth by federal and state laws and regulations. A medical diagnosis does not always guarantee school-based or special education services. For more information please check the Colorado Department of Education, Special Education Office here.
Common opportunities for consultation include:
Assisting families understand and advocate for Individualized Education Programs that meet the child's needs
Helping clients navigate the Special Education process
Attending special education meetings in schools
Observing children at school and providing recommendations to parents and teachers
My goal as a special education advocate is to help parents navigate the complex world of special education, meet their child's unique needs, ensure effective collaboration with schools, and most importantly support families as a team.
